ECNL Girls U18/19 Quarterfinals Recap

On Wednesday in St. Louis, the ECNL Girls U18/19 Finals got underway, as the final eight teams this season began their final quest to claim the ECNL Girls U18/19 National Championship.

In the first wave of quarterfinal matchups, MVLA squared off with VDA for a spot in the semifinals. MVLA got on the board just minutes into the game on an indirect free kick that was fired home to quickly put them on top 1-0. VDA battled their way back into the game before halftime, firing in a shot from inside the box after a good cutback pass to knot things up at 1-1 headed into the halftime break.

VDA snatched the lead just moments into the second half as a long ball was played up ahead and taken around the MVLA goalkeeper and launched home to make it 2-1. MVLA rallied back though, scoring from a shot slotted home inside the box to tie it up at 2-2 and then grabbing the late second half lead on a long distance free kick to go up 3-2.

In the dying minutes, VDA thought they had found an equalizer, but the goal was ruled offside and MVLA held on for the 3-2 win to book their spot in the semifinals.

In the other quarterfinal, Ohio Premier took on Slammers FC HB Køge. In the opening five minutes Ohio Premier grabbed the early 1-0 lead off a corner kick. The Slammers defense cleared the initial chance off the line, but Ohio Premier's persistence paid off as the second attempt found the back of the net for the early lead. In the second half, Slammers found the equalizer on a perfectly placed shot from the top of the box to tie things up at 1-1.

With the game still tied at 1-1 after regulation, Ohio Premier and Slammers had to go to penalty kicks to find a winner. In the end, Slammers prevailed 4-2 on penalties and set up a semifinal matchup against MVLA.

In the second wave of quarterfinal games, Michigan Hawks battled FC Dallas for a spot in the semifinals. Both sides were outstanding defensively and made it hard on each other to generate chances throughout the game. In the final minutes of the second half, Hawks finally found the breakthrough goal from a shot at the top of the box to claim the 1-0 victory.

In the final quarterfinal of the day, FC Prime took on Penn Fusion SA with the winner moving on to face the Michigan Hawks. Unlike the other quarterfinal though, there were tons of goals throughout this one as Penn Fusion rallied back from a 3-1 deficit, including a goal in the final minutes that looked like it was destined to send the game to penalty kicks. FC Prime regained their composure though and in stoppage time found the winner to grab the 4-3 lead and send themselves to a semifinal matchup with Michigan Hawks on Thursday.
